Cachaça-ing the Dream

While the entire world flocks to Brazil this August for the summer games, we’re transporting you there “in spirit” with cachaça cocktails! Brazil’s most common distilled alcoholic beverage (they have over 5,000 different brands of the stuff!) is similar to rum, but distinct too. A twist on the classic Hemingway Daiquiri, the Hemingway in Rio by Leslie Cofresi of Puerto Rico’s La Factoria takes the vegetal and sweet flavors of cachaça and amplifies them into the perfect summertime experience. Fresh, crisp, and completely balanced—sweet and tart, with a touch of bitter—this cocktail, which includes lime juice, bitters, and house-made lemongrass syrup, is the ideal way to enjoy cachaça this summer.

After winning Puerto Rico’s World Class Bartender in 2012, Leslie co-founded La Factoria in Old San Juan in 2013 looking to bring craft cocktails to the Caribbean. He didn’t disappoint: La Factoria was named one of the “World’s 50 Best Bars” by Drinks International magazine last year.


The Tijuca Tonic, by Abigail Deirdre Gullo of Compère Lapin in New Orleans, is as cool-yet-sultry as its namesake rainforest in Rio de Janeiro. Coupling bright and strong aged cachaça with refreshing lemon and cool cucumber bitters makes this drink’s flavor burst forth and quench the deepest thirst. And the star of the show is Cocktail & Sons’s brand-new Switchel syrup—of which you’re getting the absolutely first taste!

Abigail’s original cocktails have been recognized in numerous national and international competitions and have been featured in The New York Times, Imbibe, Garden & Gun, and other publications. Eater NOLA named her Bartender of the Year in 2014 and she was Heaven Hill Brands’ Bartender of the Year 2016.


The Abacachaça, created by Ana Souza of The Pontiac in Hong Kong, merges the honey, funky, and oaky flavors of barrel-aged cachaça with a combination of pineapple and spices to bring you a sippable version of Churrasco de Abacaxi (Barbecued Pineapple), a traditional Brazilian dish.

Ana, head bartender at The Pontiac (named one of Asia’s best bars 2016 by The World’s 50 Best Bars), grew up on a sugarcane farm in Brazil that produced artisanal cachaça. Years after leaving the farm, and after realizing that Latin American spirits were one of her greatest passions, she’s been expanding knowledge and appreciation for those spirits in Asia.
